WAGS Work: Madison Taylor

The WAGS Work Series aims to show our readers that we are more than the stereotypes you might be familiar with--we're creative, hard-working, driven, and willing to do whatever it takes to make this lifestyle work. We also hope to inspire women in all walks of life to get creative and think outside the box when it comes to working and creating the lives of their dreams. Please reach out to the women featured in this series if you have questions or want to learn more about what they do.

TELL US WHO YOU ARE, HOW YOU GOT INTO THE BASEBALL WORLD, AND A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOU  AND YOUR FIANCÉ.

My name is Madison Taylor and my fiancé’s name is Curtis Terry. This is my 4th baseball season and his 8th. My fiancé was blessed enough to get drafted by the Texas Rangers out of high school in 2015, and we were with them for six years. Last year we were with the Minnesota Twins and this year we are with the Baltimore Orioles.

TELL US ALL ABOUT YOUR JOB, WHAT DO YOU DO, AND HOW LONG YOU’VE BEEN WERKIN’ IT.

I've been at my job for about 3 years now. I'm currently a senior financial analyst that works directly under the VP of a European based company. I focus on complex financial modeling and data analytics for emerging markets.

HOW IN THE WORLD DID YOU FIND THIS JOB?

I believe in having two or three really great recruiters. You can go on job boards like Linkedin or Indeed, but a recruiter is a great tool to really help you find a job customized to your lifestyle. I make it very clear during the job search and interview process that we live a baseball lifestyle and flexibility is priority.

WAS WORKING REMOTELY JUST PART OF THE JOB, OR DID YOU HAVE TO ASK FOR THAT?

I keep it simple and only move forward with jobs that are completely remote. Companies can change their minds anytime and switch work models from remote to hybrid or even fully in office. Working for a company that has completely integrated into a remote workforce is what has worked best for me.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR WORK AND LIVING THE BASEBALL LIFE?

I balance work with baseball life by prioritizing what can realistically get done each day. Also recognizing when you need a break. Sometimes I cant go to every single home and away game.

HOW DID FINDING THIS JOB IMPACT YOUR LIFE PERSONALLY, AND FOR THE TWO OF YOU?

Me working full time has been such a blessing for us! This job has allowed me to pull in well into six figures a year. This allows us to really save and invest whatever is made from baseball. We have been able to pay for our wedding and find our home.

WHAT’S A TYPICAL WORK DAY FOR YOU IN THE SEASON? IN THE OFF-SEASON?

Workdays for me during the season are honestly a little crazy. My day usually starts at 5 or 6am to workout. Once I drop Curt off to the field, I'll sit in meetings for about 5 hours a day. I make it a priority to go to every home game so I make sure all of my reporting is done before I leave the house. Sometimes I'll have to step out of a game for a meeting but that's only a few times a week. After the games we eat dinner and relax. During the off season our schedule is a lot more laid back. I'll workout at 7am or 8am and work in pajamas all day. We tend to go on more dates in the off season so we are able to really enjoy our time together.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WAGS WHO ARE LOOKING FOR REMOTE WORK OR TRYING TO WORK UP THE COURAGE TO ASK TO GO REMOTE?

My number one advice would be to have a great résumé, an open mind when looking for jobs, and an amazing recruiter that can help you find a job based off of your lifestyle.

WHAT’S THE HARDEST PART OF YOUR JOB?

The hardest part about this job is the actual work. You have to make assumptions about the company's future when building out your financial models. Incorrect assumptions can have a great negative effect on the finances of the business.

WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WISH EVERYONE KNEW ABOUT BEING A WAG/BASEBALL LIFE?

I think a lot of people who look at our lifestyle assume that it is only filled with luxury, but there is a lot of hardship and sacrifice that the families have to undergo. I think also remembering to appreciate every game and every app that is something that helps keep our family grounded.
