I'm Not Ready
I cried last night.
I looked at my husband and told him I’m not ready for him to leave for spring training. As much as I want to be the strong, nothing-can-touch-me baseball wife, last night I couldn’t keep that mask on for one more second, and I crumpled.
Here’s why I wanted to tell you about it - The last thing I want you to do is look at me and think I always have everything under control. I’m still working this out day by day, just like you are. But because I am a veteran wife and have so many seasons under my belt, I want to be the first one to give you permission to approach this season from a place of truth, whatever that is to you.
Please hear this: There is no one right way to do this life.
Maybe you’re excited about finally getting to travel with your man. You can’t wait for the season to start. The adventure is beginning! I’ve been there and I am SO happy for you.
Maybe you don’t know how you’re going to do one more year of this life because you are so. darn. tired. of. it. Girl, I hear you loud and clear.
February is crazy. There is no right or wrong way to feel right now. So let’s give each other permission to feel how we feel and make sure we support each other along the way.
Let’s cheer on those who can’t wait for the adventure this season will bring. Let’s also be a listening ear to those who are struggling.
As much as we talk about our collective baseball life, at the end of the day, your journey is unique, and you get to feel however you feel about it.
As for me, I’m struggling this year. My kids are older and heavily involved in school and activities, meaning we won’t be traveling as much this season. I’m typing these words from a place of dread as we prepare for our longest separation yet.
Today I can honestly say, I’m not ready for baseball season.
And that’s ok.
We have a lot to look forward to - spring break, a new team, a new city, trips to Las Vegas and Washington D.C., meeting new friends…It’s going to be great.
But it’s also ok to admit that it’s going to be hard.
Whether you’re coming into this season cheering or weeping, we are here for you, you are not alone, and together, girls, we’ve got this.
