The WAGS Work Series aims to show our readers that we are more than the stereotypes you might be familiar with--we're creative, hard-working, driven, and willing to do whatever it takes to make this lifestyle work. We also hope to inspire women in all walks of life to get creative and think outside the box when it comes to working and creating the lives of their dreams. Please reach out to the women featured in this series if you have questions or want to learn more about what they do.
TELL US WHO YOU ARE, HOW YOU GOT INTO THE SPORTS WORLD, AND A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND.
I’m Lauren Procyshen and am the owner of Portilloz Law, PLLC in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. I met my husband, Catcher Jordan Procyshen, in 2019 when he played for the Tulsa Drillers (AA for the Dodgers). I was with friends at the game when he motioned for me to meet him after the game.
Jordan proposed to me during COVID in June 2020 on home plate at Driller Stadium since we met there. We got married at Driller Stadium on October 31, 2020 and now have a beautiful 8 month old daughter, Saylor Walker.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU? HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started out as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurse. I watched so many parents who needed advocates that I transitioned into the legal aspect. I watched babies be born that needed loving parents to adopt them or be their guardians.
I’ve always been interested in the legal field, but once I was into nursing, I knew that being an attorney was my dream.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS, WHAT YOU DO, AND HOW LONG YOU’VE BEEN WERKIN’ IT.
I started law school in 2015 at the University of Tulsa and graduated in 2017. I worked for a law firm doing medical malpractice for a few years. I met Jordan in 2019 and knew that I wanted to have the ability to travel with him.
I started my own firm, Portilloz Law, PLLC in January 2020 before we headed off to Spring Training for the Chicago Cubs. I focus on family law, custody, child support, adoptions/guardianships, personal injury, criminal law, and estate planning.
WHAT OBSTACLES HAVE YOU FACED AND HOW DID YOU PERSEVERE IN THE HARD TIMES?
I started my business in January 2020, and we all know COVID occurred in March 2020. My business definitely took a hit that year, as the courthouses closed down and work was at a standstill. By the end of 2020, business picked back up and has been growing each year.
HOW DID STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS IMPACT YOUR LIFE PERSONALLY, AND FOR THE TWO OF YOU?
Starting my own business has been the best decision of my life. Jordan was so supportive from the beginning, especially helping put my office together. It allows me to make my own work hours, so I can be available for all of Jordan’s games, I get to stay home with Saylor and we can travel together as a family.
WHAT’S A TYPICAL WORKDAY LIKE FOR YOU IN THE SEASON? IN THE OFF-SEASON?
It is definitely tough juggling baseball, a business and a baby! Thankfully, due to COVID, it allowed my business to be remote most of the time. I schedule court appearances when I am back home, as some road trips, Saylor and I head home for the week.
Jordan and I have a great schedule, where I work in the mornings and he takes care of Saylor and then when he goes to the field, we switch. It keeps a good balance in both of us getting to focus on work.
A typical work day consists of me answering emails, drafting pleadings and discovery, researching statutes and cases law, and taking client and opposing counsel calls.
WHAT’S BEEN THE HARDEST PART SO FAR? WHAT’S BEEN THE BEST?
The hardest part is just being away for long periods of time from my office during the season. Scheduling meetings and court appearances for when I'm home is a struggle. Also, just owning your own business can be a struggle in itself.
The best part has been having a great work/life balance. I am able to work and accomplish my goals, while getting to raise Saylor and have our family together.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON AND WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOUR BUSINESS?
I am continuing to grow my business and take on more cases. I would like to transition my business from being heavily family law to more estate planning cases.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WAGS WHO HOPE TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?
Do it! It can be so scary at the beginning because you are so worried you won’t have time and it will fail. You want to do something for yourself and you feel such a sense of accomplishment when something you started is successful.
