How To Utilize Hashtags On Instagram

The key to getting more eyes on your content in a natural, organic way is by utilizing hashtags on each piece of content you push out on your feed. Whether you are pushing out a static post on your feed, an IGTV, or reel you want to be getting the full use of all 30 hashtags.

NOTE: With the new algorithm there is a bit of an awkward space right now. So if you are seeing that your posts are having lower engagement and lower reach, just take a deep breath and know that everything will balance itself out once the new feature of “Reels” settles in.

Here are 8 basic rules to using hashtags on instagram:

1) Use all 30 hashtags on every post.

2) Put the group of hashtags as the first comment. It will declutter your post and it will be your first comment on your post.

3) Have your hashtags ready to be posted immediately after your post publishes or else those hashtags you just spent time researching on will immediately flop.

4) Do your research on hashtags. You can do this by simply going to the search bar and scrolling to the word TAGs and start searching anything that is..

  • Location specific hashtags (#texasblogger #austinblogger #chicagoblogger)

  • Content specific hashtags (example - self care post: #selfcareblogger #selfcaredaily #selfcarelove)

  • Niche specific hashtags (#mywhowhatwear #comfortclothing #loungwear #fashioninfluencer)

5) MAKE SURE the hashtag is not banned from IG. That will shadow ban your posts. You can check this by simply searching in the ‘TAGS’ section search bar. It will look like this.

6) Breakdown of how to group your 30 hashtags

  • Use 5 small: 20K - 90K uses

  • Use 5 large: 700K-1M uses

  • Use 20 medium: 100k-600k uses

7) Rotate out your hashtags. Do NOT use the same hashtags for every post or else IG will consider this spammy.

8) Lastly, hashtags are a learning curve. After every post go back and see which hashtags performed, and put those in a sheet or write them down to keep them grouped for future posts that relate to that specific hashtag.
