My husband and I took on a full season of sleeping on an air mattress this year and I am happy to report that we survived! I was also worried about the noise and the overall comfort. My husband was gifted the air mattress we have been using from a fellow baseball player who could not fly home with it… score!
It’s a double so it definitely could be bigger since we sleep three on it (us and a 45-pound golden retriever).
The biggest thing we did that made the air mattress life doable was investing in a mattress topper. In fact, most of the players on our team also have a topper on their air mattress.
The best deal I have heard of is from Walmart. One of the guys got a 6” mattress topper from Walmart for around $80 and said it’s more comfortable than his real bed at home. This will also significantly help with any unwanted noise.
We purchased ours at Target but it is only a 4” topper and it was more toward the $100 range. I will say I don’t notice a huge difference when we go on the road and I’m sleeping in a real bed which is pretty awesome. We also put our large dog crate at the foot of the air mattress so it isn’t moving around (the bottom of the air mattress can be like ice skates on carpet).
Also, because this is a WAGS group and I think we all understand that sometimes you have to do what you have to do; keep in mind places like target and Walmart have great return policies. Sometimes you have to work the system a little bit in the MiLB life.
